Day 1 – Wednesday 17 May – Monaco (depart mid-night)

Today board Silver Wind in Monaco to commence your cruise through the Mediterranean and on to Southampton.

In 1297, the Grimaldi Family seized this once fortified town and apart from a short time under Napoleon, has ruled this Principality ever since. The Principality of Monaco, at less than 500 acres, is smaller than New York’s Central Park and is home to many of the rich and famous, attracted in part by the absence of income tax. Monaco’s wealth is generated through tourism and its famous casinos, with the premier drawcard being the annual Monte Carlo Grand Prix. And few can forget the fairy tale marriage of Hollywood’s Grace Kelly to Prince Rainier, an event which sealed Monaco’s position as a destination for the elite.

Day 2 – Thursday 18 May – Bandol – France (Golf) – in port 8.00 am – depart 5.30 pm

Arriving in the French port of Bandol, an historic fishing port located on the Cote d’Azur, around 50 km east of the major French port city of Marseille, we leave for golf at the nearby Fregate Golf Club. The course overlooks the Mediterranean and is a leading course in the south of France. Famous for its great climate with plentiful sunshine and little rain, plus its beautiful coastline with many small beaches, there should be time to explore this lovely port post golf and prior to the Silver Wind’s departure.

Day 3 – Friday 19 May – Barcelona – Spain (Golf) – in port 8.00 am – depart 8.00 pm

We spend a port day in Barcelona, one of Europe’s finest cities and rated among the best in the world. As Spain’s 2nd largest city and capital of the Catalonia Region, it was home to the 1992 summer Olympics and today is a truly exciting destination. Barcelona has fabulous sightseeing, most notably the remarkable works and influences of Gaudi – Sagrada Familia (destined for final completion in 2026), Casa Battlo and verily the whole city it seems!

Golf is at Golf Llavaneras, a highly regarded private club located north of Barcelona with great views of the Mediterranean.

Day 4 – Saturday 20 May - Valencia – Spain (Golf) – in port 8.00 am – depart 6.00 pm

Valencia is Spain’s 3rd largest city with a total urban population of circa 1.5 million and famously was the last major city to fall to Franco’s nationalist forces in the civil war of 1936 to 1939.

Today, we’ll enjoy golf at the Robert Trent Jones Snr designed (1975) El Bosque Golf Club.

Day 5 – Sunday 21 May – Cartagena - Spain (Golf) – in port 8.00 am – depart 5 pm

Today, we’re in Cartagena, a port city located in South East Spain, founded in Roman times and now divided into an old and a new city.

Our golf focus today is the magnificent La Manga Golf Resort, specifically the West Course, the highest rated of their 3 x 18 hole golf courses. This course is rated in the top 10 in all of Southern Spain.

Day 6 – Monday 22 May – Malaga – Spain (Golf) – in port 8.00 am – depart 7 pm

The Costa del Sol is one of the most famous golfing regions in Europe and here we will play the Alhaurin Golf Club, an exciting Ballesteros designed golf course. This should still give time to look around the city of Malaga and perhaps visit the Pablo Picasso Museum. The city is a leisurely stroll from the wharf.

Day 7 – Tuesday 23 May – Cadiz – Spain (Golf) – in port 8.00 am – depart 11 pm

Having passed through the 9 mile wide Straits of Gibraltar overnight, Silver Wind will berth early morning at Cadiz. Founded around 1,100 BC, Cadiz claims to be the oldest continually occupied city in the Western World. Once one of the wealthiest ports in the world, it was made famous in English history when Sir Francis Drake invaded and plundered the port city with a surprise raid in 1587. After exploring the city in the morning – we suggest strolling one of the many self guided walks of the historic areas – we will depart for Montecastillo Barceló Golf Club, the highest rated of the many golf courses near Cadiz.

Day 8 – Wednesday 24 May – Portimao – Portugal (Golf) – in port 8.00 am – depart 6 pm

A short overnight voyage sees us greeting the dawn at Portimao, a major port city in the Algrave area of Portugal. The area is famous for its wonderful climate, great beaches and many leading golf courses. Today, enjoy a game at Onyria Palmares, rated by some as one of the best three courses in Portugal.

Day 9 – Thursday 25 May – Lisbon – Portugal (No Golf) – in port 8.00 am – depart 5 pm

We spend today in Lisbon, capital of the once great Portuguese empire and one of Europe’s premier historic cities, largely unscathed by the many European wars of the past two centuries. Located amid the hills and valleys of the northern shores of the River Targus, Lisbon is a joy to discover.

****** Today enjoy an exclusive and complimentary Virtuoso excursion comprising an extended day tour with lunch and some free time for independent exploration prior to boarding. This does not apply if you have elected for the US$150 pp on-board credit.

Day 10 – Friday 26 May – Oporto - Portugal (Golf) – in port 8.00 am – depart 4 pm

Our golf destination today is the Oporto Golf Club. Founded in 1892, it is the oldest golf club in Portugal and one of the most highly rated in the north west region of Portugal.

Post golf, there may be time to wander through historic Ribeira, the recently restored riverside district and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Experience a rest day at sea today as we travel through the Bay of Biscay and around the Brittany Peninsula to Saint Malo in France.

Day 13 – Monday 29 May – Saint Malo – France (Golf) – in port 8.00 am – depart 7 pm

Berth this morning at the famous port city of Saint Malo. With a long maritime history of seafarers, piracy included, this is an attractive and easy port to explore with many fascinating sites to visit.

Golf today is at the nearby Golf de Dinard, rated one of the best 4 courses in north west France and founded in 1887.

Day 14 – Tuesday 30 May – Honfleur – France (Golf) – in port 8.00 am – depart 8 pm

Policies of Monaco to Southampton Golf Cruise – May 2017

Golf cruises offer golfers an interesting way to travel, enjoy your passion for the game and remain fit while partaking in the gourmet delights most luxury cruise ships offer.  For those looking at the options available for you and your fellow keen golfers, here are some pro tips to help you find a cruise that meets all your needs. Finally, your ship has come in!

Check the itinerary

Check the itinerary before you book, to ensure it is a realistic schedule. Seek a cruise that features long and plentiful shore days at ports with good golf courses.  You will probably appreciate the occasional sea day to rest up and relax.

Go all-inclusive to save

High-profile US tour companies typically price their golf at US$500 (A$650) plus per person per round in addition to the cost of the cruise. Trendsetter Travel and Cruise Centre specialises in small all-inclusive luxury ships, and recommends this for the best experience.  Playing the same courses as its more expensive pier group, the golf package component of a Trendsetter cruise less than half the price of its international competitors.

Ship size does matter

Be wary of cruises for more than 1,300 passengers.  Large ships will give priority to their own tours when it comes to disembarking, preventing independently organised golfers from exiting the ship quickly.  Delays can mean missing tee-off times.  Even if you can overcome a late arrival, the delay can cause disappointment when you must abandon the course early to return to your cruise shipboat. David Cooper, the director of Trendsetter Travel, recommends selecting a cruise ship with between 100 and 900 passengers. “These smaller ships can also get to the smaller ports, such as St. Tropez, St. Malo, Menorca, Portofino, which all have great golf courses.”

Make sure you get enough time at port

Most golf excursions take at least eight hours—including return transportation to the course, an un-pressured golf game and importantly time post golf at the club for refreshments and prize giving. To make the most of your day, aim for a minimum of ten hours in port. Your group will need to arrive at the course an hour prior to tee-off, and allow for a round of four balls to be completed (plan on four and ½ hours hours).

Healthy competition and fair play

Select a golf cruise where the organisers incorporate adjustments up and down for players’ handicaps, after each round.  This means that the prize money is spread around over the tour. David Cooper advises to ask about this when you are booking.  “We run a handicap adjustment system after each round to establish a par stableford score for the day,” he says. “After eight games, the better performers may see their handicaps reduce perhaps two shots and the ‘battlers’ might earn four or five shots back.” Every tour golfer wants at least one collect.

Swing your partner ‘round

Cooper advises, “Where our golf tour participants book as a couple, they will always play as a couple unless they request otherwise.”  If you are booking as a single or wish to enhance the challenge by playing outside of your group, find an organiser who is mindful of matching players’ handicaps, so that you can get the most out of the cruise.

Beware the fake golf cruise

You may discover cruises advertised as a golf tour but, on closer inspection, find they only offer golfing pre and post cruise.  Check for this, as it might not be what you have in mind. Trendsetter golf cruises schedule a minimum of six games on cruise shore days.  David Cooper mentions, “We even create opportunities where a golf enthusiast can play additional optional rounds, and others can have a more limited golf programme depending on what they are looking for with equitable downward price adjustments.”   To learn more about the great golf cruises that Trendsetter Travel and Cruise Centre have available, please contact David on (02) 9428 5900 or on david@trendsettertravel.com.au
