Paris & Normandy – River Golf Cruise – July 2019

Paris to Normandy Golf Cruise - Luxury 14 Night Tour with 9 Golf Games - 11 to 25 July 2019

from A$13,339 per person twin share.

Trendsetter Travel & Cruise Centre invites you to join us on this luxury Paris and Normandy golf cruise/tour on-board Uniworld’s S.S. Joie de Vivre (launched in 2017). Uniworld, a leader in luxury river cruising, is regularly rated the world’s best river cruise line. The cruise includes A$780 in on board credits per couple. Our Group Cruise fares, are priced over A$1,740 pp below those advertised on the Uniworld web page (as at 30 Oct0ber 2018) and thus present great value. The cruise fares either a free return economy air fare or a return business class air ticket on either Cathay or Qatar airlines. If the air programme is declined, there is a A$1,000 pp price reduction.

Our journey commences with a 3 night stay at Dolce Chantilly, a delightful golf resort hotel, with 2 games of golf. From there, we transfer to Paris and board the boutique 128 guest S.S. Joie de Vivre to commence a 7 night Seine River cruise from Paris to Normandy (return) taking in highlights such as the Normandy Beaches, Monet’s Garden and more, as well as 3 games of golf. Our golf includes the spectacular located Golf d’Etretat and Golf de Saint Germain, the Harry Colt designed # 6th rated course in France.

The fun continues as we end our cruise and travel directly to play Le Golf National, home to the French Open and host to the Ryder Cup in September 2018. From there we travel 1 hour south to 5 star Chateau D’Augerville, where we stay for 4 nights and, our 3 final golf games including Golf de Fontainebleau , rated top # 3 in France.

Your cruise includes all meals and beverages (standard alcoholic and non-alcoholic), gratuities, wifi, shore excursions, use of an on-board fitness centre and, for those in suites, a dedicated and highly trained butler. The 7 nights pre- and post-cruise includes breakfast every day and dinner on 5 of the 7 nights. In addition, guests will enjoy 9 rounds of golf, all coach transfers, prize money, and drinks post golf.

Golfers should not be concerned about joining the tour with non-golfing partners as the cruise includes complimentary shore excursions ensuring that partners will be kept well entertained. Pre-cruise, Chantilly is a delightful town to explore and given it is but 30 minutes by train from Paris, there is also the opportunity for a day excursion to the City of Light. Post-cruise, there will be ample opportunities for excursions independent of golfing partners.

Additional details on the Uniworld Paris to Normandy golf cruise can be found on the following link:
https://www.uniworld.com/au/river-cruise/europe/france/paris-and-normandy/2019-paris-to-paris/day-to-day/

Because we will play some of France’s most famous and traditional private courses, motorised cart hire is not possible (even with a medical certificate) on 2 of the courses. Electric/pull buggy hire alternatives are available on those occasions. On Fontainebleau, we can arrange alternative golf (at no extra cost) for those that do not wish to walk. On the 2nd course (St Germain), there are 4 one person scooters which you can hire to avoid walking the course

Trendsetter will be happy to organise additional nights pre and post tour at advantageous rates, and some with special benefits, so that you can make the most of your time in Europe.

Your tour host is David Cooper, a Director, co-owner of Trendsetter Travel & Cruise Centre and head of Trendsetter Travel’s golf cruise programme. He is an enthusiastic golfer and longstanding member of one of Sydney’s most prestigious golf clubs. He has golfed and cruised extensively throughout the world.

David invites you to join him on this fantastic golf tour, including the chance to play 9 golf games, including 3 of the top 10 golf courses in France.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Thursday 11 July 2019 – Paris/Chantilly

Transfer from either CDG airport (30 minutes by car) or Paris to Chantilly (train is an option from Paris) for your 3 night stay at the 200 room hotel Dolce Chantilly https://www.dolcechantilly.com/about-us/. You are booked in the 29 sqm Terrace Rooms. Enjoy a get together over drinks with David, and fellow golf cruise guests, prior to dinner.

Inclusions: pre dinner drinks, dinner (including drink)

Day 2 – Friday 12 July 2019 – Chantilly – Golf d’Apremont

After breakfast, we travel to and play Golf d’Apremont. This park land course (with several water carries) was a favourite on our June 2018 Paris to Normandy golf cruise and it was uniformly recommended to be included on future Trendsetter golf cruises. It was preferred over the more highly rated Golf de Chantilly, the other course we consider playing while staying in Chantilly (but is unavailable during our stay in Chantilly due to the scheduling of a national open tournament).

For the non-golfers, there will be an opportunity to visit the nearby Chateau de Chantilly, one of the best chateaux in all France and an 1870s rebuild of the original which was destroyed in the French Revolution. The chateau features a collection of over 800 masterpieces of European art.

For dinner, we recommend one of two reasonably priced authentic French restaurants in the main street of Chantilly – a good chance to practice your French.

Inclusions: breakfast, golf, coach transfers, prize money and drinks post golf

Day 3 – Saturday 13 July 2019 – Chantilly – Golf de Raray

Today we travel approximately 30 minutes by coach to play Golf de Raray.

For the non golfers, either relax in the Chantilly area or perhaps visit Paris (30 minutes by train) for the day.

For dinner, we recommend one of two reasonably priced authentic French restaurants in the main street of Chantilly – another chance to practice your French.

Inclusions: breakfast, golf, prize money and drinks post golf

Day 4 – Sunday 14 July 2019 – Paris

Late morning we take a 1 hour coach transfer to Paris to board SS Joie de Vivre on the Seine River. The afternoon is free to independently explore Paris.

Inclusions: breakfast, dinner and coach transfer to SS Joie de Vivre

Day 5 – Monday 15 July 2019 – Vernon – Giverny – Les Andelys

After cruising through the night, wake up at the riverside town of Vernon where your inclusive tour (at your option by either bike or coach) will take you to Giverny and Monet’s Garden. After a pleasant couple of hours touring Monet’s Garden and home, you will return to the S.S. Joie de Vivre for lunch and an afternoon cruise to Les Andelys, another lovely rural village adjoining the Seine. The more adventurous of you might choose to climb up to Chateau Gaillard, Richard the Lionheart’s historic 12th century castle. However, there is coach transportation for those unable or unwilling to walk. The stunning views of the Seine and the French countryside from atop the stronghold are not to be missed.

Inclusions: breakfast, lunch and dinner plus all standard tours and drinks.

Day 6 – Tuesday 16 July 2019 – Rouen – Golf du Vaudreuil

We berth early this morning in Rouen, the medieval town where St Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Today we will coach to and play Golf du Vaudreuil. There should be time for you to independently explore the town of Rouen.

Inclusions: breakfast and dinner plus golf, coach transfers, prize money and drinks post golf.

Day 7 – Wednesday 17 July 2019 – Rouen – Golf d’Etretat

After a drive through the scenic Normandy countryside, we visit the lovely seaside town of Etretat and play a round of golf at Golf d’Etretat. Located on top of the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic, this is one of the world’s most stunning golf locations and rivals the views from Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand. We expect if time permits to schedule one hour either pre or post cruise for you to independently explore the town of Etretat.

Non-golfers will visit the beautiful fishing village of Honfleur, located at the mouth of the Seine.

Inclusions: breakfast and dinner plus golf, coach transfers, prize money, drinks post golf and Etretat visit.

Day 8 – Thursday 18 July 2019 – Caudebec- En Caux - Normandy Beaches

The highlight of this cruise for many will be the full day (7.30 am to 7 pm) spent exploring the Normandy landing beaches. This tour includes Utah and Omaha Beaches, Sainte-Mere-Elgise (first town taken by American forces and made famous in film Longest Day and where you will independently lunch), Point du Hoc and the main US Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach. It is a sensational tour. For those looking for a shorter and less military history based tour there is the Bayeaux tapestry tour plus Normandy Beach tour (which includes Omaha Beach and main US cemetery) – this is 8 am to 6 pm.

Inclusions: breakfast and dinner plus full day tour of the Normandy Beach battlefields.

Day 9 – Friday 19 July 2019 – Mantes-la-Jolie – Golf de Saint Germain

We berth this morning at Mantes-la-Jolie. Today offers another opportunity to golf at one of Paris’ most famous golf courses. We are booked to play the Harry Colt (he of Pine Valley fame) designed Golf de Saint Germain which was remodelled in the 1990s to return the course to a more classic Colt design. This course is private and ranked # 6 in all of France – it has hosted 9 French Open Tournaments including the famous event won by Seve Bellesteros with a 62 in the final round. For those unable or unwilling to walk, there are 4 x 1 person motorised scooters available for hire. There are no available motorised carts although there are ample electric trolleys for hire.

Non golfers will visit the Palace of Versailles.

Inclusions: breakfast and dinner plus golf, coach transfers, prize money and drinks post golf.

Day 10 – Saturday 20 July 2019 – Paris

Today is for exploring Paris. There are a number of included guided tour options of Paris including a cruise and city tour, a walking tour and a cycle tour. Of course, there are also opportunities for independent exploring in Paris, including visits to one or more of the many famous art museums and galleries. We can recommend the 3 hour cycle tour which stops and visits many of the key tourist icons including Eiffel Tour, Louvre and Notre Dame.

There is a tour option to visit Moulon Rouge on the Saturday night – cost Euro 200 pp – includes coach transfers, show and dinner. You can use your A$390 pp on board credit to pay for this and still have some credit left over. This can only be booked once you board Joie de Vivre – something we recommend you do upon boarding the prior Sunday.

Tonight enjoy a final dinner on board the S.S. Joie de Vivre.

Inclusions: breakfast, lunch and dinner plus all standard tours and drinks.

Day 11 – Sunday 21 July 2019 – Paris – Le Golf National

While our cruise ends this morning, the tour does not. We will depart SS Joie de Vivre for Le Golf National and play the famous and highly rated Albatross Course which is the regular home of the French Open and was venue for the Ryder Cup in late September 2018. This is a stunning golf course – for many they will never play a harder golf course. Following golf we travel an hour south to Chateau D’Augerville (http://www.chateau-augerville.com/en/ ), our 5 star home for the next 4 nights. Each night there will be a 3 course set menu gastronomic dinner. This will not disappoint and the menu is changed significantly each evening. Dinner includes 2 complimentary glasses of wine each night and a complimentary pre dinner drink on the 1st night.

Inclusions: breakfast and dinner plus golf, coach transfers, prize money and drinks post golf.

Day 12 – Monday 22 July 2019 – Chateau d'Augerville - Golf de Fontainebleau

This morning we will travel 30 minutes north to visit Chateau de Fontainebleau, home to the French Royal Family for over 8 centuries and a now beautifully restored and ornate historic site. We will be transferred to Golf de Fontainebleau while the non-golfers will be transferred back to Chateau D’Augerville.

Meanwhile, the golfers will enjoy playing at the famous Golf de Fontainebleau. This is one of the oldest clubs in France with the course originally designed by Tom Simpson in 1920. It is located in the Fontainebleau forest, part of the ancient imperial hunting grounds, with magnificent trees (some several centuries old) lining the fairways. From time to time, Golf de Fontainebleau has been rated number 1 in France. The latest rankings place it in the top 4 in France and in the top 6 in Europe. It is not to be missed! For anyone who is either unable or does not wish to walk the course, a game can be arranged that afternoon at no additional cost at Golf d’Augerville.

Inclusions: breakfast and dinner plus golf, coach transfers, prize money, drinks post golf and entry to Chateau de Fontainebleau.

Day 13 – Tuesday 23 July 2019 – Chateau D’Augerville & Golf

Today we base ourselves at Chateau D’Augerville and enjoy the wonderful park like grounds and facilities on offer. We will play the delightful Golf d’Augerville. The course was designed in 1995 and is a park land course claimed to be one of the most beautiful in France. The course has many elevation changes with the championship tees over 6,800 yards with a par 72 layout. There is much wild life and the challenge of several crossings of the L’Essonne river which meanders through the golf course. The piece de resistance is the dramatic final hole which requires a shot across the river to a near island green located in front of the Chateau.

Tour inclusions: breakfast, dinner, golf, prize money, and drinks post golf

Day 14 – Wednesday 24 July 2019 - Chateau D’Augerville - Golf de Cely`

Today we coach 25 minutes and play Golf de Cely, our 9th and final game of golf. Tonight enjoy a farewell tour dinner.

Day 15 – Thursday 25 July 2019 – Chateau Augerville/Paris – Tour Ends

Policies of Paris & Normandy – River Golf Cruise – July 2019

Golf cruises offer golfers an interesting way to travel, enjoy your passion for the game and remain fit while partaking in the gourmet delights most luxury cruise ships offer.  For those looking at the options available for you and your fellow keen golfers, here are some pro tips to help you find a cruise that meets all your needs. Finally, your ship has come in!

Check the itinerary

Check the itinerary before you book, to ensure it is a realistic schedule. Seek a cruise that features long and plentiful shore days at ports with good golf courses.  You will probably appreciate the occasional sea day to rest up and relax.

Go all-inclusive to save

High-profile US tour companies typically price their golf at US$500 (A$650) plus per person per round in addition to the cost of the cruise. Trendsetter Travel and Cruise Centre specialises in small all-inclusive luxury ships, and recommends this for the best experience.  Playing the same courses as its more expensive pier group, the golf package component of a Trendsetter cruise less than half the price of its international competitors.

Ship size does matter

Be wary of cruises for more than 1,300 passengers.  Large ships will give priority to their own tours when it comes to disembarking, preventing independently organised golfers from exiting the ship quickly.  Delays can mean missing tee-off times.  Even if you can overcome a late arrival, the delay can cause disappointment when you must abandon the course early to return to your cruise shipboat. David Cooper, the director of Trendsetter Travel, recommends selecting a cruise ship with between 100 and 900 passengers. “These smaller ships can also get to the smaller ports, such as St. Tropez, St. Malo, Menorca, Portofino, which all have great golf courses.”

Make sure you get enough time at port

Most golf excursions take at least eight hours—including return transportation to the course, an un-pressured golf game and importantly time post golf at the club for refreshments and prize giving. To make the most of your day, aim for a minimum of ten hours in port. Your group will need to arrive at the course an hour prior to tee-off, and allow for a round of four balls to be completed (plan on four and ½ hours hours).

Healthy competition and fair play

Select a golf cruise where the organisers incorporate adjustments up and down for players’ handicaps, after each round.  This means that the prize money is spread around over the tour. David Cooper advises to ask about this when you are booking.  “We run a handicap adjustment system after each round to establish a par stableford score for the day,” he says. “After eight games, the better performers may see their handicaps reduce perhaps two shots and the ‘battlers’ might earn four or five shots back.” Every tour golfer wants at least one collect.

Swing your partner ‘round

Cooper advises, “Where our golf tour participants book as a couple, they will always play as a couple unless they request otherwise.”  If you are booking as a single or wish to enhance the challenge by playing outside of your group, find an organiser who is mindful of matching players’ handicaps, so that you can get the most out of the cruise.

Beware the fake golf cruise

You may discover cruises advertised as a golf tour but, on closer inspection, find they only offer golfing pre and post cruise.  Check for this, as it might not be what you have in mind. Trendsetter golf cruises schedule a minimum of six games on cruise shore days.  David Cooper mentions, “We even create opportunities where a golf enthusiast can play additional optional rounds, and others can have a more limited golf programme depending on what they are looking for with equitable downward price adjustments.”   To learn more about the great golf cruises that Trendsetter Travel and Cruise Centre have available, please contact David on (02) 9428 5900 or on david@trendsettertravel.com.au
