Perth Golf Tour – April 2021

18 to 26 April 2021 (9 days - 8 nights) - Detailed Itinerary & Golf Programme

Tour Cost AUD 6,600/Couple (AUD 3,300 pp Twin Share)

You are invited to join Trendsetter Travel’s Perth golf tour.  Tour hosts are David Cooper and Adrienne Witteman.  Stay 8 nights at the 5 star QT Hotel in a QT King room with separate bath and shower.  Room upgrade is available.  Golf will be scheduled on all but 1 day – with that day available for independent activities.

Golf carts will be complimentary for all golf rounds played.   Golf will include 6 rounds – all at top 10 ranked courses in Western Australia – and all ranked in the top 100 golf courses in Australia by both Australia Golf and Golf Digest magazines.  If you elect to walk with a pull trolley for any of the golf games, we provide a cash credit equal to the cost saving.

Each golf game will be run with a stableford competition and daily individual events for men, ladies and 4 Ball Better Ball.  Strict rules of golf will apply other than the “Irish Rule” for lost balls in the interests of speeding up play.

Our tour is scheduled for late Autumn when golf courses should be in great condition with average temperatures High 25/Low 15 – average rainfall in all of April is a modest 3.3 cm (less than 1.4 inches) – ideal golfing conditions. Average forecast temperatures and expected rainfall are near identical with forecast conditions for our cancelled November 2020 Perth Golf Tour.

This tour will operate subject to resumption of air travel between the Eastern States and Western Australia, without the need for quarantine. A full cash refund of the tour will be made if travel to Western Australia is not possible without quarantine requirements.

There is no minimum number of participants.

Itinerary

Sunday 18 April 2021 – Arrive Perth

Fly independently to Perth, transfer to the Perth CBD (13 km – 17 minute taxi ride) and stay 8 nights at the centrally located 5 Star QT Hotel in Murray Street.  Enjoy welcome drinks and dinner (including selected wines) tonight at QT Hotel’s highly rated Santini Semi-Private Dining Room.

We chose QT Hotel from among several 5 star Perth Hotels due to the high specification of its rooms, great public areas (including roof top bar with views of the city skyline and Swan River) and the use of a semi private dining area for our welcome and farewell dinner functions.

Accommodation will be in 36 sqm QT King Rooms with separate bath and shower.  The option exists to upgrade to the larger QT Luxe rooms (40 sqm) with additional options including the ability to open windows.

Accommodation: QT Perth – 8 nights (including cooked breakfast daily)

Inclusions:  Welcome drinks and dinner (including standard drinks)

Monday 19 April 2021 –Golf at Joondalup

After a less than 30 minute drive north of the CBD, we tee off at the highly regarded 27 hole Joondalup Golf Resort. Joondalup was constructed on a disused quarry and offers 3 x 9 hole routings all of which are of an equivalent high standard. The course is consistently rated in the top Australia golf courses (current rankings are Australian Golf # 37 and Golf Digest # 18) and in the top 3 golf courses in Western Australia. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, it has many classic holes with design features you are unlikely to ever face on another golf course making it a very memorable initial game on tour.

Tuesday 20 April 2021 – Golf at Meadow Springs

After a relaxing breakfast, we travel south to the seaside town of Mandurah and play Meadow Springs Golf Club.  Developed in 1993, this Robert Trent Jones course remains highly regarded, ranks # 6 in Western Australia and is consistently in the top 100 Australian golf clubs (current rankings are Australian Golf # 52 and Golf Digest # 84 – but has rated as high as # 26).

Wednesday 21 April 2021 – Golf at Sun City Country Club

A drive 45 minutes north of the Perth CBD will see us arrive at the seaside town of Yanchep and the Sun City Country Club.  Built in 1974, it was substantially redesigned by Mike Clayton in 2012.   Ranked # 9 in Perth, it has had many positive reviews over recent years.  The course is consistently in the top 100 Australian golf clubs (current ratings are Australian Golf # 75 and Golf Digest # 81 – but has rated as high as # 45).

Thursday 22 April 2021 – Golf at The Vines: Lakes Course

After a 40 minute transfer, we will arrive at The Vines Golf Resort (1989) home to two 18 hole courses, The Lakes and Ellendale.  Today we play The Lakes, the higher rated of the 2 courses and a regular home for many years to a European Tour event.  Designed by Graham Marsh and Ross Watson, it has consistently rated in the top 100 of Australia golf courses (current rankings are Australian Golf # 93 (has been as high as # 47) and Golf Digest # 87 (has been as high as # 50).

Friday 23 April 2021 – Golf at Lake Karrinyup

Following breakfast, we depart for a late morning tee off at Western Australia’s # 1 golf course, Lake Karrinyup.  It usually ranks in the top 20 of Australian golf courses (current rankings are Australian Golf # 21 and Golf Digest # 15).  Designed in 1924 by Alex Russell, the then reigning Australian Open champion and Australian business partner of Dr Alister McKenzie, the club has held numerous professional golf tournaments including 4 Australian Opens and is currently the venue for an annual European Tour event.  The course was upgraded by Mike Clayton in 2008. While Lake Karrinyup permits groups on Friday mornings, there is a current restriction on non-member play due to the high level of member play through the restriction of travel outside of WA. While we expect the restriction to be removed once inter- state travel is possible, we have organised a fall back game at Joondalup this day which will see us play a different rota of the 27 hole course. A game at Joondalup never disappoints.

Saturday 24 April 2021 – Perth – Free Day

After 4 days of golf, a rest day is scheduled – this is your chance to relax, perhaps enjoy a pleasant lunch at a nearby riverside restaurant, visit historic Freemantle or one of the outstanding wineries located near Perth.

Sunday 25 April 2021 – Golf at The Cut

Today we return to Mandurah and play the highly regarded The Cut (developed by James Wilcher who was previously a member of the Greg Norman design team).  Widely recognised as one of the most dramatic golf courses in Australia, it is a true links course with many holes played through the sand dunes and offers views of the Indian Ocean.  Consistently rated in the top 4 courses in Western Australia and the top 100 of Australia golf courses (current rankings are Australian Golf # 59 (has been as high as # 33) and Golf Digest # 36 (has been as high as # 16)).

Farewell drinks and dinner are included this evening.

Monday 26 April 2021 – Depart Perth

Our tour finishes after breakfast.  Some may wish to extend their stay in Western Australia, perhaps driving south to visit the Margaret Valley wine region.   For many, it will be a short taxi ride to Perth Airport and a 4 hour flight to the Eastern States.

Policies of Perth Golf Tour – April 2021

Golf cruises offer golfers an interesting way to travel, enjoy your passion for the game and remain fit while partaking in the gourmet delights most luxury cruise ships offer.  For those looking at the options available for you and your fellow keen golfers, here are some pro tips to help you find a cruise that meets all your needs. Finally, your ship has come in!

Check the itinerary

Check the itinerary before you book, to ensure it is a realistic schedule. Seek a cruise that features long and plentiful shore days at ports with good golf courses.  You will probably appreciate the occasional sea day to rest up and relax.

Go all-inclusive to save

High-profile US tour companies typically price their golf at US$500 (A$650) plus per person per round in addition to the cost of the cruise. Trendsetter Travel and Cruise Centre specialises in small all-inclusive luxury ships, and recommends this for the best experience.  Playing the same courses as its more expensive pier group, the golf package component of a Trendsetter cruise less than half the price of its international competitors.

Ship size does matter

Be wary of cruises for more than 1,300 passengers.  Large ships will give priority to their own tours when it comes to disembarking, preventing independently organised golfers from exiting the ship quickly.  Delays can mean missing tee-off times.  Even if you can overcome a late arrival, the delay can cause disappointment when you must abandon the course early to return to your cruise shipboat. David Cooper, the director of Trendsetter Travel, recommends selecting a cruise ship with between 100 and 900 passengers. “These smaller ships can also get to the smaller ports, such as St. Tropez, St. Malo, Menorca, Portofino, which all have great golf courses.”

Make sure you get enough time at port

Most golf excursions take at least eight hours—including return transportation to the course, an un-pressured golf game and importantly time post golf at the club for refreshments and prize giving. To make the most of your day, aim for a minimum of ten hours in port. Your group will need to arrive at the course an hour prior to tee-off, and allow for a round of four balls to be completed (plan on four and ½ hours hours).

Healthy competition and fair play

Select a golf cruise where the organisers incorporate adjustments up and down for players’ handicaps, after each round.  This means that the prize money is spread around over the tour. David Cooper advises to ask about this when you are booking.  “We run a handicap adjustment system after each round to establish a par stableford score for the day,” he says. “After eight games, the better performers may see their handicaps reduce perhaps two shots and the ‘battlers’ might earn four or five shots back.” Every tour golfer wants at least one collect.

Swing your partner ‘round

Cooper advises, “Where our golf tour participants book as a couple, they will always play as a couple unless they request otherwise.”  If you are booking as a single or wish to enhance the challenge by playing outside of your group, find an organiser who is mindful of matching players’ handicaps, so that you can get the most out of the cruise.

Beware the fake golf cruise

You may discover cruises advertised as a golf tour but, on closer inspection, find they only offer golfing pre and post cruise.  Check for this, as it might not be what you have in mind. Trendsetter golf cruises schedule a minimum of six games on cruise shore days.  David Cooper mentions, “We even create opportunities where a golf enthusiast can play additional optional rounds, and others can have a more limited golf programme depending on what they are looking for with equitable downward price adjustments.”   To learn more about the great golf cruises that Trendsetter Travel and Cruise Centre have available, please contact David on (02) 9428 5900 or on david@trendsettertravel.com.au
